Raiders of the Lost Architecture

Port Augusta has an interesting heritage as a trading centre and supply route from the cities of Australia and overseas, to the outback settlements, and the architecture of the area reflects this. Considering the size of the township the old buildings are large and gracious, and many of them are listed in the State Heritage register for their significance to the state of South Australia. However there is currently no local register of buildings of significance to Port Augusta, and in fact many of the stories of the older buildings are being lost as the older generation passes away - and thus we lose the significance of their role in the region's history.

The Great Northern and The Exchange Hotels... once the site of the busiest trading centre north of Adelaide, and literally the watering hole for hundreds of wharfies, sailors, bullock drovers, cameleers and townsfolk... soon to be just a faded photo in a council office?

We are wanting to find stories of old buildings, still here, or going, or gone... that will help us to have clues about the past of Port Augusta. Whatever we can find out is subject to change as people add more information or references.

Please contribute your knowledge, for it is your heritage.
